As a new school year begins, our local roads become a lot busier. School buses return to their routes, parents are making drop-offs, teenagers are driving to school, and children are walking and biking through neighborhoods. With so many people sharing the road, back-to-school season is an important reminder for every driver to slow down, stay alert and pay attention to their surroundings.

Here are a few reminders to help keep you and everyone else safe on the roads.
Watch for School Buses
School buses make frequent stops, so drivers should always slow down when approaching a bus, no matter which side of the road they are on. Watch for flashing lights and stop when required. Stay watchful until all students are off of the road. Kids are kids and may suddenly cross the road, run toward a bus or step into traffic. Stay alert and be prepared to stop.
Slow Down in School Zones
School zones can be especially congested during morning drop-off and afternoon pickup. Drivers may encounter buses, crossing guards, pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles stopping unexpectedly. Follow posted school-zone speed limits and leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one ahead. Even when you’re running late, speeding through a school zone is never worth the risk.
Teen (& Parent) Drivers: PUT THE PHONE AWAY
For teenagers, the new school year may mean driving themselves—and possibly their friends or siblings—to school for the first time. Parents should remind young drivers about the importance of staying focused behind the wheel. That means:
Follow the speed limit.
Wear a seat belt every trip.
Avoid aggressive or distracted driving.
Watch carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Don’t let passengers become a distraction.
Never text while driving.
If you need to use your phone, pull over and stop somewhere safe. A text or notification can wait.
Watch for Students Walking and Biking
Drivers should use extra caution around sidewalks, crosswalks, intersections, driveways and residential streets. Don’t assume a child sees your vehicle simply because you see them. Slow down, give pedestrians and bicyclists plenty of space, and be prepared for unexpected movements.
During this time of year especially, remember these safe-driving tips:
Slow down. Pay attention. Follow the speed limit. Watch for children. And never text while driving. These simple habits can help make the roads safer for students, families and everyone else sharing the road.
