Why you should seek medical attention after an accident

If you’ve been involved in an accident or injured because of someone else’s negligence, one of the most important things you can do is seek medical attention. And do that as oon as possible—ideally the same day as the accident or the following day. If that isn’t possible, don’t wait any longer than necessary. Make an appointment and get checked out as soon as you can.

Here's a quick "Law Minute" video and a bit more explanation below.

Why is prompt medical treatment important?

Because the insurance company may look closely at when you first received treatment and that could determine the outcome of your claim.

For example, if you wait two or three weeks before seeing a doctor, an insurance company may question whether your injuries were actually caused by the accident. They may argue that if you were seriously injured, you would have sought medical attention sooner.

That doesn’t mean every injury requires an emergency room visit. But it does mean you shouldn’t ignore symptoms or assume that an injury will simply go away on its own.

Don't Let Your Determination Work Against You

Here in the South, we tend to be resilient people. We work hard, take care of our families and often try to push through pain rather than stop and seek medical attention. And honestly, who wants to go to the doctor if they don’t have to?

But after an accident, it’s important to take your health seriously. Some injuries may not become fully apparent right away. Pain, stiffness and other symptoms can develop or become more noticeable over the days following an accident.

Seeing a doctor soon after the accident establishes a baseline of your condition. Be honest and thorough when explaining what you are feeling, even if your symptoms seem minor at first. If you need additional treatment later, your medical records can help document how your condition has progressed. Most importantly, follow your doctor's recommendations and continue treatment if it is medically necessary.
