The answer is "maybe so, maybe not", and I say that after 30+ years as a practicing personal injury attorney. It really depends on the circumstances of your case. While not every accident requires legal representation, many people quickly discover that dealing with insurance companies, medical bills, and legal deadlines can become overwhelming.

When you may not need a personal injury attorney...
Not every accident requires hiring a lawyer, and I'm saying this as a lawyer.
If the accident involved only minor property damage, no one was injured, and the insurance company promptly agrees to pay for the repairs, you may be able to handle the claim on your own. For example, you may not need an attorney if:
You were involved in a minor fender-bender with little vehicle damage.
No one was injured and no medical treatment was necessary.
Fault for the accident is clear and undisputed.
The insurance company accepts responsibility and fairly pays for your vehicle repairs.
There are no disputes regarding lost wages, medical bills, or other damages.
However, many accidents that initially appear minor become more complicated over time.
It's not uncommon for injuries such as whiplash, neck pain, back injuries, or concussions to develop days after a crash. But if you have suffered any injury in an accident, it is imparative for your health and your possbile claim, to obtain medical treatment as soon as possible after the accident. Likewise, insurance companies may initially appear cooperative but later dispute medical treatment or offer less compensation than expected.
When you should contact a personal injury attorney...
Generally, you should consider hiring an attorney if:
You suffered injuries that required medical treatment.
You're missing work because of your injuries.
The insurance company is disputing who caused the accident.
The insurance company denied your claim or made a low settlement offer.
The accident involved a commercial vehicle or an 18-wheeler.
You suffered a serious or permanent injury.
A loved one was seriously injured or killed.
If you're ever unsure whether you need legal representation, there's little downside to speaking with an attorney. Most personal injury lawyers like myself offer free consultations, and a brief conversation can help you understand your options. A good attorney should be willing to tell you when you can successfully handle a claim on your own—and when having experienced legal counsel could make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.
Insurance companies handle claims every day and most people do not. Having an experienced advocate on your side can level the playing field. As always, please reach out if you have any questions and stay safe out there!
